The successful conclusion of the three-day capacity-building workshop on the Social Protection Management management of Data And report in Zaria is more than just another government training programme. It is a clear demonstration of the Katsina State Government’s determination to build a modern, efficient, and technology-driven public service under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON.

Across the world, governments are embracing digital solutions to improve planning, monitor public expenditure, and ensure that social intervention programmes reach the people who need them most. Katsina State is gradually positioning itself among these forward-looking governments by investing in digital systems that promote transparency, accountability, and evidence-based decision-making.

The introduction of the Social Protection Management of Data and report, is a significant reform. For years, social protection data has often been managed through fragmented systems that made coordination and reporting difficult. With the deployment of this unified platform, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) now have a common framework for harmonised data entry, expenditure tracking, monitoring, and reporting.

Equally commendable is the government’s decision to invest in human capacity before rolling out the system. Technology alone cannot deliver results without skilled personnel. By training Social Protection Desk Officers from across MDAs, the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning has ensured that those responsible for implementing social protection programmes are equipped with the knowledge required to maximise the benefits of the new digital platform.

The closing remarks by the Director of Social Protection, Dr. Tijjani, were particularly instructive. His call on participants to use the software wisely for the development of Katsina State reflects the broader vision behind the initiative. Digital tools are only as effective as the commitment of those entrusted with using them. His assurance that the Ministry will convene quarterly meetings of the Social Protection Technical Working Group further demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning, collaboration, and accountability.

These reforms align closely with Governor Radda’s vision of building institutions that are transparent, efficient, and responsive to the needs of citizens. Beyond roads, schools, hospitals, and other physical infrastructure, the administration is strengthening the systems that support effective governance. This is the kind of institutional development that delivers lasting impact.

As Katsina State continues its digital transformation journey, the success of initiatives such as the Data Digital management will depend on sustained political will, continuous capacity building, and the commitment of every stakeholder. If properly implemented, the system has the potential to improve policy implementation, enhance public trust, and ensure that social protection programmes achieve their intended objectives.

This workshop should therefore be remembered not simply as a three-day training exercise, but as another important milestone in the ongoing effort to build a smarter, more accountable, and digitally enabled Katsina State.
